Dedicated to growing oaks

Since 1980

grown with care

We’ve been growing and planting oak trees for over 40 years. All our oaks are sustainably grown from a limited seasonal batch of acorns without the use of pesticides. If you have any further enquiries, please get in touch.

How are the oaks sourced?

All our acorns are sourced from ancient oak trees across the UK. We partner with the owners of these historic trees to collect limited seasonal batches. Acorn harvests can be temperamental so some years we are able to collect many, whilst others we may not get any at all.

How are the oaks grown?

All young oaks are grown for 1-2 years in a peat-free compost at our family run tree nursery www.avelandtrees.co.uk. They are regularly watered and protected from pests and diseases to ensure that they are despatched in good health.

When should I plant my oak?

Traditionally the tree planting season runs from November to March. However, because our oaks are despatched in recycled root pouches, they can actually be planted all year round.

Where should I plant my oak?

Oaks grow well in any deep soils, sandy or clay. They grow a big tap root so avoid shallow soils with limited rooting depth. Do not plant under the shade of existing trees – oaks like to grow in full sunlight. Always get the permission of the landowner.

How do I plant my oak?

Dig a hole big enough to comfortably take the oak tree and its pot. Refill the hole with soil until it covers the top of the pot and press down firmly with your foot. If you are protecting your tree with a spiral guard and cane, push the cane through the bottom of the pot so that it anchors the tree into the ground.

How do I care for my oak?

If you are planting the tree between April and September, water the tree regularly (once a week) for 2 months until the oak tree has grown a tap root into the soil. A spiral guard will protect the oak tree from voles, rabbits and hares, but keep horses and other livestock away from young trees.

Why doesn't my oak have any leaves?

Don't worry, oaks are deciduous trees and shred their leaves over winter. They will grow back again in the Spring!
