The Great British Oak Tree
British oak trees have long been a beloved and iconic symbol of the countrys natural heritage. These mighty trees are known for their long lifespan, impressive size, and enduring strength. It is no wonder that their resilient nature has become so engrained within British culture. Many are over 1000 years old, making them among the oldest living organisms in the country and witnesses to our evolving landscapes and lives. Famous examples include The Bowthorpe Oak in Manthorpe, Lincolnshire and The Major Oak in Sherwood Forest.
In ancient times, oak trees were seen as sacred and were often associated with gods and goddesses, druids and royalty. They were also used as locations to commemorate special occasions from weddings to memorials and indeed still are today. However, their use is not only symbolic but also highly practical. Oak wood is widely used as a reliable building material and was heavily used within the shipbuilding and furniture industries.
At Heritage Oaks we are passionate about celebrating the history and wonder of these magnificent trees and preserving their natural heritage. Our aim is to uncover and preserve the stories of these trees for future generations and offer an opportunity to maintain their legacies for the future.
